One Missed Call

One Missed Call is a remake of a Japanese horror movie titled Chakushin Ari. The plot of the movie is that a group of teens start receiving mysterious calls from themselves, with the date and time of when they will die,one after another.
Ok I wish I could say that this a good horror movie but, it was more a excuse for complete stupidity, providing more laughter than scares. I really would like to know who the manufacture is for the phone that was calling all the teens. I mean to survive thru the trauma and still maintain a full charged battery (I gotta get me one of those). This movie could have been called One Missed Movie.

Starring: Shannyn Sossamon, Edward Burns and Ray Wise

First Sunday

First Sunday is David Talbert's first feature film as both director and writer. Talbert, famously know for his plays, hooked up with Ice Cube to bring us this comedy film about two friends, Durell (Cube) and LeeJohn (Morgan), repeat offenders that must raise some big bucks to save whats left of their lives (literally). The only thing that they can come up with is to rob the neighborhood Church on first Sunday. This plan goes array when the two find out that someone within the church has beat them to the loot, but is still in the church among the hostages that they are holding.
The combination of Cube and Morgan is not the best, but will suffice for the sack of this movie. The movie is funny, just not hilariously funny. Some of the funniest moments are when Katt Williams, playing the choir director, opens his mouth. Also, you got to catch the cameo of Rickey Smiley as Sister Jenkins.
Detroit was privileged to one of the Red Carpet screenings for First Sunday, which was hosted by David Talbert and the lovely Loretta Devine who plays Sister Doris in the movie.

Starring: Ice Cube, Tracy Morgan, Katt Williams, Loretta Devine, Malinda Williams and Chi Mcbride

Cloverfield

On the night that a group of friends set out to celebrate the promotion and going away of one of their homeboy, a giant monster from who knows where attacks New York, sending the city into complete chaos. All while the small group attempts to get out the city, they are filming the events on their video camera (the whole film is filmed from the camera). The monster begins to let loose some smaller creatures that chase the group through the subways of the city, while they try to go back for a friend that is trapped in one of the knocked over skyscrapers.
Cloverfield is not the most screen friendly film that you will see, because it is shot with the video cam, but it gets a big nod for the plot. The sound effects also play a big part of keeping your interest in this movie. A worthwhile film.

Starring: Lizzy Caplan, Jessica Lucas, T.J. Miller and Michael Stahl-David

Mad Money

Don (Danson) and Bridget (Keaton) Cardigan were living the ideal life, (big home, nice cars, lavish parties, etc...) until Don loses his job and is unable to find a new one. On the verge of losing everything Bridget, who has no work experience, starts working as a cleaning woman at the Federal Reserve. Soon she comes up with an idea of how to get some of the money that is destroyed at the Reserve, but must enlist the help of money shredder Nina (Latifah) and fellow cleaner Jackie (Holmes). Together they begin to get paid, life begins to start looking a lot better for them and all involved. But when is enough enough? Spending binges begin to attract the attention of the FBI, sending the gang into a mad money frenzy.
Even thou this movie was a little cheesy, it was still an entertainingly funny movie. Danson and Keaton provided most of the beef in this film, showing why they are true veterans of the film world. Not a great movie, but not a bad one either. It is worth seeing.
