KNOWING

Plot:

A school opening a time capsule that has been buried for 50 years hands out it's contents. When one student opens his package and finds a letter with a lot of numbers configured on it, that was placed inside by a by a girl that recorded the numbers off some subliminal message. The boy sets it aside at his home and his father John Koestler (Cage), a science professor begins to study and dissect the numbers revealing that they are dates, times and location of major disasters that have occurred during the letter's burial and events that are to occur within the near future. Trying to figure a way to prevent the future calamities he sets out to gain the assistance of the girl that wrote the letter's only relatives, her daughter Diana (Bryne) and granddaughter Abby (Robinson), who senses the same eerie subliminal messages that her grandmother did while composing the letter.

Reel Talk:

Knowing is a movie that will pull you into it with anticipation, wondering what might take place next. This film will sorta remind you a lot of the Final Destination series, which is a good thing. But I feel that towards the end of the movie the writers got brain freeze, cause the ending sucks. I was greatly disappointed at how this movie had me revving with anticipation and let me down with such a stupid ending. It will do well at the box office because of our desire for mysteries, but what a waste.

Starring: Nicolas Cage, Rose Bryne, Chandler Canterbury and Lara Robinson
Directed by: Alex Proyas
Rated: PG-13

I LOVE YOU, MAN

Plot:

When Peter (Rudd) and Zooey (Jones) Decide to get married, it is soon discovered by Zooey that Peter does not nor has he ever had any male friends. In need of groomsmen and a best man, Peter begins to go on Man-Dates, scouting for possible recruits for his wedding party. After several disappointing dates Peter encounters Sydney Fife (Segel), a free loading, free spirited investment broker who tweaks his interest. Eventually the two bond and begin on an unbalanced journey to becoming best buddies.

Reel Talk:

First - These rolls are always idea for Paul Rudd, you know the quirky, non -chalant and humorless guy. No one plays them better. Jason Segel who had a break out lead performance in Forgetting Sarah Marshall pretty much follows up with the same ingredients for this character.Jon Favreau and Jaime Pressly plays Zooey's married friends Barry and Denise who have a strange but working relationship. Although their scenes are brief, they are funny. Entertaining movie, not a belly buster, but some sprinkled gags that will make you laugh.

Starring: Paul Rudd, Jason Segel, Rashida Jones, Jon Favreau and Jaime Pressly

RACE TO WITCH MOUNTAIN

Plot:

When two teen space aliens crash land on Earth so that they can retrieve an object that's needed to save the universe, they must enlist the help of a hulking cab driver named Jack Bruno (Johnson), when they are being stalked by another deadly alien predator who is after the same object. Jack who has no idea what he has gotten himself into then recruits the services of UFO specialist Dr. Alex Friedman (Gugino) who he had met earlier at an convention about outer space. Together the two must help the two space travelers get back to their spaceship while trying to avoid the space hunter and a power-struck government agent named Henry Burke (Hinds) who wants to use them for experimental purposes.

Reel Talk:

I hope that Dwayne Johnson, being the charismatic talented actor that he is, will not diminish his career with continuing to do kiddie movies(remember Vin Diesel with the Pacifier). His first film for Walt Disney Pictures, The Game Plan, was a pretty good movie probably because he had an adorable co-star in Madison Pettis. But in Race To Witch Mountain his second film for Disney, he has no charming little girl to save him, he has to rely on his charm and muscles to make it work but unfortunately they don't work. It helps a little that Carla Gugino (who I happen to think is sexy) co-stars, but other than that the film is sorta flat with a bunch of special effects that they ripped from other films hoping they work for this one. Trust me,you don't have to race to go see this film.

Starring: Dwayne Johnson, Carla Gugino, AnnaSophia Robb, Alexander Ludwig and Ciaran Hinds
Directed by: Andy Fickman
Rated: PG

WATCHMEN

Plot:

In this film adaptation of Alan Moore's graphic DC Marvel comic novel based on a group of superheros called Watchmen, who's mission is to watch over humanity, but leaves to question - who is watching the Watchmen? During the mid 80's, in the midst of the nuclear struggle between the United States and Russia, superheros have been force to retire from crime fighting leaving the cities in a state of chaos. When former superhero Edward Blake/The Comedian (Morgan) is mysteriously killed, Walter Kovacs/Rorshach (Haley)forms an investigation enlisting the help of fellow Watchmen Dan Dreilberg/Nite Owl II (Wilson) and Laurie Jupiter/Silk Spectre II (Akerman) to find out who is out to assassinate retired superheros. With the world in the middle of a nuclear crisis, Silk Spectre II tries to persuade her extraterrestrial lover Dr. Manhattan/Jon Osterman (Crudup) who can prevent any atomic disasters to help save mankind.

Reel Talk:

Being one of the most highly anticipated movies of this year, I gotta say I was excited going into the screening for this film. But let me put it out there that if you have not read the novel like I didn't, you won't know what the heck is going on. I was pretty confused with which direction the film was going. Now that doesn't make for a bad movie, the characters are an exciting and interesting bunch and along with the spectacular visual effects, I would say director Zack Synder (famous for his directing work for 300) does a good job of keeping your attention despite the confusing story. Warning: Although this is a comic book adaptation, Watchmen is not for children. This is probably the most graphically violent and sexually over-toned superhero movie to date. It's a movie worth seeing but you will enjoy it better if you have read the novel.

Starring: Malin Akerman, Billy Crudup, Matthew Goode, Jackie Earle Haley, Jeffrey Dean Morgan, Patrick Wilson and Carla Gugino
Directed by: Zack Snyder

John Legend's Open Letter to the New York Post

By John Legend

Open Letter to the New York Post

Dear Editor:

I'm trying to understand what possible motivation you may have had for publishing that vile cartoon depicting the shooting of the chimpanzee that went crazy. I guess you thought it would be funny to suggest that whomever was responsible for writing the Economic Recovery

legislation must have the intelligence and judgment of a deranged, violent chimpanzee, and should be shot to protect the larger community. Really? Did it occur to you that this suggestion would imply a connection between President Barack Obama and the deranged chimpanzee? Did it occur to you that our President has been receiving death threats since early in his candidacy? Did it occur to you that blacks have historically been compared to various apes as a way of racist insult and mockery? Did you intend to invoke these painful themes when you printed the cartoon?

If that's not what you intended, then it was stupid and willfully ignorant of you not to connect these easily connectible dots. If it is what you intended, then you obviously wanted to be grossly provocative, racist and offensive to the sensibilities of most reasonable Americans. Either way, you should not have printed this cartoon, and the fact that you did is truly reprehensible. I can't imagine what possible justification you have for this. I've read your lame statement in response to the outrage you provoked. Shame on you for dodging the real issue and then using the letter as an opportunity to attack Rev. Sharpton. This is not about Rev. Sharpton. It's about the cartoon being blatantly racist and offensive.

I believe in freedom of speech, and you have every right to print what you want. But freedom of speech still comes with responsibilities and consequences. You are responsible for printing this cartoon, and I hope you experience some real consequences for it. I'm personally boycotting your paper and won't do any interviews with any of your reporters, and I encourage all of my colleagues in the entertainment business to do so as well. I implore your advertisers to seriously reconsider their business relationships with you as well.

You should print an apology in your paper acknowledging that this cartoon was ignorant, offensive and racist and should not have been printed.

I'm well aware of our country's history of racism and violence, but I truly believe we are better than this filth. As we attempt to rise above our difficult past and look toward a better future, we don't need the New York Post to resurrect the images of Jim Crow to deride the new administration and put black folks in our place. Please feel free to criticize and honestly evaluate our new President, but do so without the incendiary images and rhetoric.

Sincerely,

John Legend

Editor's note: The New York Post has apologized with the following statement, but defended their position:

Wednesday's Page Six cartoon -- caricaturing Monday's police shooting of a chimpanzee in Connecticut -- has created considerable controversy. But it has been taken as something else -- as a depiction of President Obama, as a thinly veiled expression of racism. This most certainly was not its intent; to those who were offended by the image, we apologize. However, there are some in the media and in public life who have had differences with The Post in the past -- and they see the incident as an opportunity for payback. To them, no apology is due. Sometimes a cartoon is just a cartoon -- even as the opportunists seek to make it something else."

Reverend Al Sharpton offered a counter statement:

"The New York Post statement will be discussed by all of the leadership of the various groups that have mobilized and we will respond to it at the rally at 5:00 p.m. tomorrow outside of the New York Post. At this point there will be no cancellation of the rally and though we think it is the right thing for them to apologize to those they offended, they seem to want to want to blame the offense on those of whom raised the issue, rather than take responsibility for what they did. However, rather than engage as they are in name calling back and forth, we will make a collective decision on how to proceed. All of us can only wish the New York Post had taken a more mature position when the issue was first raised rather than belatedly come with a conditional statement after people began mobilizing and preparing to challenge the waiver of News Corp in the City where they own several television stations and newspapers."

FRIDAY THE 13TH

Plot:

In this remake of the 1980 classic horror movie, a group of young adults camp out at the legendary Crystal Lake, where story has it that a young Jason Voorhees almost drowned at the hands of negligent camp counselors and then witnessed his mother's murder. The group's attempt to indulge in a weekend of sex and drugs turns into a night of blood and gore at the machete hand of an avenging Jason. Soon after, Clay (Padalecki) sets out to find his sister who was among the group that came up missing. He then becomes involved with another group of young adults who also plan on staying in a cabin on Crystal Lake, until the hockey masked murderer comes making a house call.

Reel Talk:

Ok, although this is a remake, there were (I really lost count) many murdering Jason movies that kinda wore thin for slasher fans. Like most slasher films the script is senseless and the film is full of idiots, so don't be expecting anything different with this one. If you're looking to be frighten, this film is not for you, but if you want a good laugh get ready to bust some stitches cause this film doesn't disappoint with the constant stupidity that makes for a good comedy/horror movie. Word of advise: Stop with the remakes and give us something original and scary.

Starring: Jared Padalecki, Danielle Panabaker, Amanda Righetti, Travis Van Winkle and Derek Mears

THE INTERNATIONAL

Plot:

Interpol agent Louis Salinger (Owen) and Assistant District Attorney Eleanor Whitman (Watts) team up to tackle the biggest and most dangerous assignment of their lives. While investigating possible corruption within the biggest bank in the world the pair realize that the banks power and control extends to governments globally and they will do whatever it takes, even murdering anyone that tries to expose the banks involvement into financing terrorism. The only way to bring down this beast, Salinger finds out, is to become a beast himself, compromising his strong belief in the justice system that he has sworn to uphold.

Reel Talk:

I liked this movie, it had all the elements for a good thriller movie - good guys, bad guys, conspiracy, intensity and action. It actually had a good plot that was consistent throughout the movie. Clive Owen as the intense Interpol agent, brings that same vibe that he displayed in Shoot Em Up. You'll find this to be evident in the art gallery scene, which is one of the movies highlight moments. Naomi Watts puts in a blah performance, but its not her fault, the role just didn't require much from her character. This movie is not a must see but a worthwhile if you choose to see it.

NOTORIOUS

Plot:

It was all a dream for Christopher "Biggie" Wallace as he was taken from the mean streets of Brooklyn to super stardom as one of the greatest lyricist to rap on the mic. Notorious chronicles the life of a young Christopher (Wallace) to the thugged out rapper that soon became the Notorious B.I.G. (Woolard). Finding out that the only way to stay out of jail and still make the type of money legally that he needs to take care of his family he hooks up with an ambitious producer Sean "Puffy" Combs (Luke), who together they take the rap music game by storm. His encounters with the various women in his life, mother Voletta (Bassett), Lil Kim (Naughton) and his wife Faith Evans (Smith). It also touches on the beef he had with Tupac (Mackie) that riled the East coast/West coast feud that led to the untimely deaths of both rappers.

Reel Talk:

I didn't really know what to expect going to the screening for this movie because I had question marks about the casting. But after seeing the movie some of the characters that I questioned sold me with their performances. Like Woolard portraying Biggie, he is obviously more attractive than the real Big, but his charming depiction wins you over and Luke as Puffy was a hugh question mark, but seeing his mannerism and dancing, he had Puff's swagger down packed. Naturi Naughton as Lil Kim was hot and Antonique Smith has a strong resemblance to the real Faith Evans. The ones that didn't make the cut were Angela Bassett as Big's mother (she was too Hollywood for this movie), Marc John Jeffries as Lil Cease and Anthony Mackie as Tupac, they could have gotten someone a little grittier. But overall the film is really entertaining, especially if your a Biggie fan or hip hop enthusiasts. Having the opportunity to see him perform live on several occasions, this film brought back a lot of memories. One of the key factors in this film is the soundtrack that is banging through out the movie. Its also good seeing Christopher Jordan Wallace portraying his dad as a young Biggie, this should have been a great honor for him.

Starring: Jamal Woolard, Derek Luke, Angela Bassett, Anthony Mackie, Naturi Naughton, Marc John Jefferies and Antonique Smith

PAUL BLART:MALL COP

Plot:

Paul Blart (James) is an overweight lonely single parent who pacifies his pity by over indulging with food. The only thing that matters to him is his daughter and his job as a mall security guard, which he's not even good at that but it's all he has that gives him a strong sense of authority. While breaking in rookie guard Veck (O'Donnell), Paul has a chance encounter with Amy (Mays) who works at one of the stores at the mall. He falls in love with her only to consistently do something outrageous to make her have second thoughts about being his friend. When the mall is taken over by a gang of acrobatic criminals that intend to rob some ATM machines through out the complex and take Amy and some other vendors hostage - Paul Blart becomes a mall cop to uphold justice and to save the woman he loves.

Reel Talk:

This was one cheesy movie! I felt some Ritz crackers needed to go with it. As talented a comedian as Kevin James is, even he could not save this movie. You may get a few laughs
within this movie but don't be expecting anything more. I'm not counting James out , just would like to see him in a better movie.

Starring: Kevin James, Keir O'Donnell, Jayma Mays,Raini Rodriguez, Peter Gerety and Jamal Mixon
